BREAKING NEWS Mon 12 May 2008| CMEV records 64 incidents Mon, 12-05-2008 06:00:00 The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence has recorded 64 incidents of violence as at 6 p.m today, 10 May. Of these, 48 have been classified as Major Offences and 16 as Minor. The majority of the Major Offences - 28 - were committed in the Batticaloa District followed by Ampara (12) and Trincomalee (08). Of the Major Offences, systematic impersonation was the most widespread with a particular concentration in the Batticaloa District where 15 of the 2 such incidents occurred. Areas of serious concern in respect of violence and malpractice in the province are Valiachennai and Kathankudy inthe Batticaloa District, the Pottuvil Polling Division in the Ampara District and Thiriyai in the Trincomalee District. But the groups, Freedom House and UN Watch, said Tuesday that Gabon and Zambia are virtually guaranteed seats because candidates are chosen by regional groups and Africa has an uncontested slate in the election, scheduled for May 21. Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, which is based in Geneva, criticized democratic countries in Africa and elsewhere for failing to compete for seats on the council, where they could become advocates for human rights. "Instead, they lend international credibility to repressive governments that routinely violate the rights of their own citizens," Neuer said in a statement.
