\'Stop LTTE from raising funds\' urges Consul General- Toronto
13-05-2008

(By: Bandula Jayasekara - Consul General for Sri Lanka -Toronto)

Though more and more Sri Lankan Tamils and Sri Lankan/Canadian Tamils have begun to oppose and stand up against the extortion and harassment meted out to them by the LTTE-front organizations in Toronto, many still live in fear because these front groups threaten to harm relatives in Sri Lanka, states Council General for Sri Lanka in Toronto in an article forwarded to the Canadian \'Globe and Mail\' news portal on Tuesday (May 13).

The Council General\'s statement follows the crack downs made on the LTTE front organisation - \'World Tamil Movement\' by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) last month.

The RCMP has filed documents in court seeking authorization to seize the World Tamil Movement\'s bank accounts, who are said \'busy fund raisers for the internationally banned terror outfit\'. WTM is alleged of intimidating, extorting and fundraising from the 250,000 strong Tamil community in Canada to assist the LTTE, a terrorist organisation whose suicide bombings and political assassinations have killed 4,000 people in the past two years.

Following is the full text of the article. I have received many complaints from frightened Sri Lankan Tamils on how they are being harassed by the LTTE in Toronto and the surrounding area (Sri Lanka\'s Model Democracy Is Being Ravaged By War - May 12).

Though more and more Sri Lankan Tamils and Sri Lankan/Canadian Tamils have begun to oppose and stand up against the extortion and harassment meted out to them by the LTTE-front organizations in Toronto, many still live in fear because these front groups threaten to harm relatives in Sri Lanka. Many of them are forced to take part in demonstrations against Sri Lanka, including old ladies and children. I wonder how many Canadians, including Bob Rae, are aware of LTTE\'s Grandma Brigade, where they train grandmothers to use weapons.

If Mr Rae , for whom we have great respect, and his colleagues were to tell LTTE groups and supporters, \"Stop raising funds here. Force your leader to end terrorism in Sri Lanka\" It would help bring peace, and the model democracy in Sri Lanka would flourish.
