UK police arrest fourth man in Tamil Tiger probe
06-05-2008

British police arrested a fourth man on Tuesday as part of an anti-terrorism investigation into the Sri Lankan rebel group the Tamil Tigers.

The 51-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of the morning in the southwestern town of Swindon "on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism", police said in a statement.

He is the fourth man to be arrested during what police described as a "long-term investigation into the alleged funding and procurement activity in support of terrorism overseas."

Last week police arrested two men, aged 39 and 46, at separate addresses in Wales and another, aged 33, in London. Police said two people have previously been charged in connection with the same inquiry.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is a rebel group fighting for an independent state in the north and east of Sri Lanka. Fighting between Sri Lankan government forces and the LTTE has intensified since the Colombo government pulled out of a six-year-old ceasefire pact in January. (Reporting by Kate Kelland.
