NIRJ DEVA LAUNCHES GLOBAL CAMPAIGN TO PROVIDE LAPTOPS TO 100 MILLION CHILDREN IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: 24-04-2008
With the President of the European Council Danillo Turk President of Slovenia who is the current President of the EU Council and Dr Hans Gert Poettering President of the European Parliament, Nirj Deva Conservative MEP for the South East of England in the European Parliament launched the global campaign to provide 100 million laptops for children in developing countries.
Together with Maria Martens MEP fellow EPP-ED Coordinator of the Development Committee of the European Parliament Nirj Deva demonstrated the extraordinary laptop which he said \" will change the world forever by empowering the poor children of the developing countries \"
The laptop which works by solar power can be used in remote villages without access to electricity and can be connected to the world wide web through a solar powered connector which can communicate with satellites to download the internet. Each laptop he said can come preloaded with a 1000 books, an astonishing transformation of the access to education. Can you imagine a poor child without electricity empowered with the internet, 1000 books and access to the global information portals, communicating with the whole world from a remote African or Asian village which has no electricity or running piped water.
Its not enough to give grants and hand outs to the poor countries of the world. \"Over the last 30 years the EU has donated over 300 billion euros AND WHAT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED ? The number of those not attending school has gone up, those living at the margin has increased. There is an old saying that it is better to give a starving man a fishing net than fish. In today\'s world millions of poor children will only escape poverty through education. This computer is the door to a new world and a key to many children realising their full potential Deva said.
