MCG-sponsored Thames Vihara New Year Festival in the UK attracts record crowd… 15-04-2008
There was a record turnout at the Mike Cooke Group-sponsored Thames Buddhist Vihara Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival which was held on Saturday the 12th of April at the Archbishop Lanfranc School in Croydon. The event was sponsored by the Mike Cooke Group of Companies for the 6th year in succession.
The festival which has become tremendously popular with Sri Lankans in the UK for staying true to traditional Sri Lankan values. This year’s event was attended by several leading dignitaries including High Commissioner Kshenuka Senewiratne, the Sri Lankan Minister of Agricultural Development, Maithripala Sirisena, the worshipful Mayor of Croydon councillor Derek Millard and Mike Cooke, Chairman of MCG.
A New Year events program which began with religious segments moved on to the many traditional outdoor pursuits, including the hugely popular tug of war and short distance races for all age groups. The main cultural program provided pupils of the Thames Buddhist Vihara Sunday School a stage to display their talents; from traditional Raban playing to several cultural plays directed by Kalasuri Jinadasa Nivithigala; violin recitals and even a ballet. However, the most immensely popular segment of the day proved to be a Tiny Tots fancy dress parade which was warmly appreciated by the crowd.
It truly was an outstanding event and credit is wholly due to the festival organizing committee headed by the Venerable Somarathne. A special note of thanks must also be extended to Dr Herath Kularatne, the president of the Thames Meditation Society and his committee who oversaw the organizing and staging of the festival.
