Sri Lankan University Students in the UK gather at the High Commission 20-03-2008
Over 150 Sri Lankan University students in the UK attended the third in a series of meetings for the benefit of the Sri Lankan university students organized by the High Commission at the High Commission premises, on 15th March.
High Commissioner Kshenuka Senewiratne welcoming the students said that the Mission considered that it was the Mission's special responsibility to nurture and interact closely with the Sri Lankan university students considering them as country's national assets of tomorrow and future leaders in their chosen fields. She added that her hope and expectation is that they would return to the country at the conclusion of their academic pursuits to serve our motherland and thus enabling the country to benefit from the knowledge and experience they have gained.
Ms Leora Fernando, an undergraduate at the London Metropolitan University spoke on the benefits she derived from her summer internship at Brandix, leading apparel exporting company in Sri Lanka and appreciated the arrangements made by the High Commission for the university students to follow summer internship programmes at leading blue chip companies and public institutions in Sri Lanka.
The High Commission had also arranged an interactive session on career guidance with the assistance of the Association of Professional Sri Lankans in the UK (APSL). The members who served on the panel were : Dr Andrew Nayagam, Consultant Physician, Mr Mervin Silva, IT Consultant, Dr Keerthi Devendra, Engineer Rolls Royce Aero Engines, Mr Rohan de Alwis, Solicitor and Director of Ferrari & Masserati UK, Mrs Lushani Kodituwakku, Senior Associate KPMG, Mr Sam Jayasena, Entrepreneur, Dr Anya Perera, Postgraduate Coordinator and senior University lecturer and Dr Chandima Siriwardena, General Practitioner.
As a follow-up to the discussion APSL agreed to arrange a mentoring and training programme to prepare university students for professional work experience in the UK. The event concluded with a Sri Lankan lunch and fellowship.
