The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence has recorded 64 incidents of violence as at 6 p.m today, 10 May. Of these, 48 have been classified as Major Offences and 16 as Minor. The majority of the Major Offences - 28 - were committed in the Batticaloa District followed by Ampara (12) and Trincomalee (08).
Of the Major Offences, systematic impersonation was the most widespread with a particular concentration in the Batticaloa District where 15 of the 2 such incidents occurred.
Areas of serious concern in respect of violence and malpractice in the province are Valiachennai and Kathankudy inthe Batticaloa District, the Pottuvil Polling Division in the Ampara District and Thiriyai in the Trincomalee District.
CMEV calls upon the Election Commissioner to order a re-poll in these areas.

Chairman of the University Grants Commission Professor Gamini Samaranayake says academic activities of the South Asian University will start in August next year.
The University is to be set up in joint collaboration of countries in the region, according to a proposal presented by the Indian President at the recent summit of heads of state of SAARC leaders.
A one hundred acre plot has already being reserved in New Delhi, India, for this purpose.
Professor Samaranayake added two hundred more Sri Lankans will be accorded the opportunity to pursue studies in India with setting up of this university.
The Chairman further said higher education ministers in the SAARC region has acceded to his request to conduct their conference in Colombo shortly.

On May 10, the LTTE launched three major attacks in the east. They sank a naval cargo ship within the highly defended Trincomalee harbour.
