Seminar on \"Use of Offshore Sand in the Construction Industry

CCI in collaboration with Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (SLLRDC) plan to educate local contractors on Use of Offshore Sand in the Construction Industry.

CEO of the CCI Dakshitha Talgodapitiya says this seminar would be held on 29th April 2008 at Galle Face Hotel Colombo 3. Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister of Urban Development and Sacred Area Development will inaugurate it.

He said this Seminar is designed to enlighten the participants on the technical suitability of offshore sand and adverse environmental impacts of river sand mining and on regulations and enforcement of provisions in the Mines & Minerals Act to ensure optimum utilization of natural resources.

Technical properties of offshore sand and standards available for use for construction purposes and an overview of the construction sand crisis in Sri Lanka will be highlighted at this Seminar. A short documentary film on Offshore Sand and aggregate mining using trailer suction hopper dredgers will also be screened.

The seminar is also expected to allay any misconceptions prevailing regarding use of offshore sand for construction, which would undoubtedly reduce the prevalent high cost of construction.

Targeted participants are Readymix concrete manufacturers, construction contractors and construction consultants such as structural engineers, architects and designers in addition to property developers and home builders.

Prof. Priyan Dias and Dr. Anura Nanayakkara from the University of Moratuwa, Dr. N.P Wijayananda, Chairman, Geological Surveys and Mines Bureau, Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Chairman, SLLRDC, Mr. M.A.A.N. Hemakumara, Actg. Director, Central Environmental Authority and private sector users of offshore sand for construction will make presentations.

Siemens Ltd said on Monday its energy division has received an order from Sri Lanka's state-run power supply utility to upgrade the distribution network in the country's capital Colombo.

The order is worth about 2 billion rupees and is the company's largest order in Sri Lanka, Siemens said in a statement.
