Maharagama cancer hospital completes Linear Accelerator System Unit 16-04-2008
Construction of the Linear Accelerator System Unit at the cancer hospital in Maharagama has been completed. The linear accelerator system is one of the latest technologies used to treat cancer patients. The Ministry of Health spent one billion rupees for this construction.
Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva undertook an inspection tour in the Maharagama cancer hospital to observe the functions of the new unit. Around three million rupees will have to be spent as maintenance costs of the unit annually.
There is an increase in the number of cancer patients in Sri Lanka. Director of the Maharagama cancer hospital Dr. Kanishaka Karunaratne says the hospital accepts nearly 15 thousand intakes annually. 60 percent of them are women. Around 100 children receive treatment at the hospital annually. Nearly seven hundred patients are attending clinics of the hospital daily. Currently there are around 850 intake patients at the hospital.

Siemens Ltd said on Monday its energy division has received an order from Sri Lanka's state-run power supply utility to upgrade the distribution network in the country's capital Colombo.
The order is worth about 2 billion rupees and is the company's largest order in Sri Lanka, Siemens said in a statement.
Ahead of the news, Siemens shares ended at 476.25 rupees, up 1.5 percent in a weak Mumbai market.
