Omanthai Entry/Exit point face standstill 19-11-2008
The Sri Lanka Army says that transportation across the Omanthai Entry/Exit point faced a complete standstill today (Nov. 19th) due to the absence of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) officials.
The Omanthai Entry/Exit point, which is opened between 9.00 am - 1.00 pm on a daily basis was closed yesterday as well due to the same reason.
However, the point remained closed yesterday after the ICRC officials failed to report to duty until 1.30 pm.
Speaking to the media, military spokesman, Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that though the Entry/Exit point in Omanthai was not officially closed, it was impossible to open the crossing point for traffic without the presence of the ICRC officials.
Meanwhile, ICRC spokesperson, Sarasi Wijerathne said that the aid workers were unable to report for duty, as they were unable to obtain security guarantees.
Under such a backdrop, convoys carrying essential food items and fuel for IDS in the Wanni were seen parked in Vavuniya, reports say.
