Police begins investigations

Extensive investigations are now being held on the suicide bomb attack occurred at Colombo Fort this morning.

Police Media spokesperson Senior DIG N.K. Ilangakoon said the Colombo Crime Investigation Division and the Fort Police conduct investigations according to the instructions of CID. The Government Analyst has also concluded his investigation. It is being identified the motorbike which the suicide bomber had travelled has been registered in the Eastern Province. The registered number of the bike is EP MX 3875.

The bomb which is believed to be weighed two to three kilograms had been planted in the oil tank of the bike. The investigations have revealed it contained high explosives and large number of iron balls. The police say body parts of the suicide LTTE cadre have also been recovered.

Meanwhile Director of the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Hector Weerasinghe says nine persons have been killed from the incident and seven of them are policemen. Out of them three are Woman Police Constables. 94 injured persons have been admitted to the hospital. 30 of them are Police officers and six of them are Army personnel. Dr. Weerasinghe said 58 civilians have also been injured by the incident.

Ten persons are in critical condition. The bus of the Police Riot Squad which was used to provide security for a demonstration of the United National Party against the Eastern Provincial Council Election caught in the suicide attack. Police say 15 more vehicles have also been damaged by the bomb blast.

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry moved a supplementary budget in parliament on Tuesday to obtain Rs. 2,880,180,332 for the forthcoming SAARC summit.

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama will present this estimate and the parliament will hold a six hour debate on this proposal.

According to the parliament sources recurrent expenditure will be Rs.401,881,272.00 and Capital expenditure will be Rs.2,478,299,060.00.

Sri Lanka army has declared Iluppaikkadavai town liberated for the first time after 21 years this afternoon (July 20).
