Ranil to take up GSP+ with EU 08-05-2008
Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is planning to meet with representatives of the European Union and secure a renewal of the GSP+ facility for the country that expires in June.
Mr. Wickremesinghe says he will take up the responsibility after setting aside political differences for the betterment of the garments industry, despite the lackadaisical attitude of the president and his government.
The present regime had failed to fulfill certain conditions in the agreement for the export of garment products to Europe with duty concessions, which makes it possible that there it would not be renewed after June.
They include the safeguarding of human rights and the resolution of the national conflict by political means, he said.
The country would lose a large income and the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands at stake if the benefit discontinues, Mr. Wickremesinghe pointed out.
The opposition leader said he would meet with EU representatives in Brussels and attempt to get it renewed.
Despite the animosities against him, Mr. Wickremesinghe said, he would raise the matter with the President as well in consideration of the country\'s economic security.
Meanwhile European Union wants Sri Lanka to receive GSP+ again for coming three years. Sri Lanka will get GSP + again if it meets the eligibility criteria .The government can meet criteria if it wants to and the EU is working closely with Sri Lankan government to that end, said Julian Wilson, EU Charge de Affairs in Colombo.
Speaking at the EU\'s 51 birthday held on Thursday in Colombo he said that he is not going to bore with Sri Lanka further detail on GSP+ .
\"I will only say that a lot of melodramatic rubbish has been written about the renewal of GSP+ in local press. The truth is simple if somewhat banal-the EU wants Sri Lanka to receive GSP+ again for the coming three years, he said.
