08-05-2008

The Ministry of Health has focused its attention on the ongoing strike action at the Ratnapura Teaching Hospital. After initial investigations the Ministry transferred the nursing official concerned.

As a result of the strike action three patients at the hospital have died so far. Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva gave directions today to the Director General of Health Services Dr. Ajith Mendis to provide an investigation report into the deaths.

The Minister said they will thereafter look into possibilities of taking legal action against those responsible for the deaths.

He observed that legal provisions should be brought in to ban strikes of the health sector that endanger lives of hapless patients. He requests all workers to immediately report for duty without further inconveniencing patients.

Meanwhile, at a media conference in Colombo today Secretary to the government medical officers association Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya appreciated government measures taken regarding the situation at the Ratnapura Hospital and assured of the fullest cooperation of his association to further action in this connection.
