Hand grenade lobbed at SLA route patrol - Jaffna 08-05-2008
Unidentified LTTE operatives hurled hand grenades at a SLA route patrol along the Parameshwaran - Kaladdy main road in Jaffna town area in proximity of the Jaffna University and reportedly have fled taking cover among commuters and civilians present, on Wednesday at around 7.p.m.
According to Jaffna security sources, a grenade has exploded but no damages were caused to civilian or security forces personnel.
Troops have refrained from retaliating avoiding any civilian fatalities, security sources said. Tension prevailed in the area and among many University students who were engaged in their evening studies.
Troops cordoned off the area and recovered an unexploded hand grenade during search operations conducted.

An LTTE air craft was detected by the air defence system yesterday evening over the LTTE built Iranamadu runway, military sources said.
A senior Air Force official told media that the air defence system had detected the LTTE aircraft soon after, it was airborne. “However it immediately disappeared from the radar system, as it went down,” the official said.

Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan was sworn-in as the Chief Minister for the Eastern Province before President Mahinda Rajapaksa this evening.
