Colombo in nuclear cover-up Munza Mushtaq 02-05-2008
In a desperate attempt to prevent a massive diplomatic row, the Sri Lankan Government took speedy action to camouflage a seemingly innocent energy advertisement which could have resulted in a fallout between Colombo and super power United States.
“Just days after the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) put up an advertisement on nuclear power generation, the government was compelled to rebut certain statements made by high-ranking government appointed officials after the Sri Lankan Government was warned that the impending visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the advertisement could lead to a major fall-out between Sri Lanka and the United States,” sources said.
With the US openly expressing apprehension over Iran and Sri Lanka’s growing relationship, the advertisement, which called for an input from energy experts both based in Sri Lanka and overseas, gave the indication that the country was teaming up with Iran to develop nuclear power.
“The statement by CEB Chairman Udaya Kariyawasam who claimed that the CEB would be getting Iranian expertise on the matter had led to the US expressing its antagonism over the matter,” a source said.
“This prompted the government, which took up the matter at the highest level, to quickly rebut the story, fearing a backlash from the US and to quell any anxiety,” the source said.
Meanwhile, when members of the CEB Engineers’ Union (CEBEU) met with Power and Energy Minister John Seneviratne on Friday evening, the Minister had expressed his anger over the advertisement which was carried in newspapers, allegedly at the CEB Chairman’s sole discretion.
“The government has still not taken a policy decision to look into nuclear power as an energy option and nuclear power is not in the CEB’s long-term generation plan either, Minister Seneviratne informed us,” CEBEU President J. Meegoda said.
