Relief Services for displaced families 30-04-2008
The Ministry of Disaster Relief Services provides cooked food sufficient for three days and dry ration for one week to the people who have been displaced due to floods.
More than 60 thousand persons in eight districts have been distressed due to heavy rains that lashed the island during the past few days. 1521 displaced persons have taken temporary shelter at 37 centers.
In a media briefing held in Colombo today deputy director of the National Relief Services Center Janaka Gunawardena said the government disbursed three million rupees to provide relief to flood victims in Kalutara, Colombo, Gampaha and Rathnapura districts.
Compensation will be paid to an injured person to the maximum of ten thousand rupees each. A maximum of 50 thousand rupees will be paid to persons whose houses were damaged due to floods. A maximum of 20 thousand rupees will also be paid to damages of cultivations.
Speaking at the media briefing, head of the landslides monitoring unit of the national building research organization R.M.S. Bandara said they have identified a number of areas in the Kandy, Rathnapura, Kalutara, Galle, Matara and Kegalle districts which are vulnerable to landslides. Secretary to the Ministry of Disaster Management, Peter Dias Amarasinghe said pilot projects implemented affiliated to river basins of Kelani, Kalu, Nilwala and Walawe rivers will help to reduce flood threat in future.
