Flood conditions are receding

According to the sources flood conditions are receding in many parts of the country.

The Sabaragamuwa provincial council says water levels are dropping in the Ratnapura town. Assistance continue to be provided to the flood victims. The Sabaragamuwa provincial council, Ministry of Disaster Management and several other government and voluntary organisations are engaged in this task. Floods caused great damage in are including Ratnapura, Elapatha and Kotamulla.

The Navy and the Army are engaged in relief measures in these areas. The Sabaragamuwa Provincial council has taken steps for all cooperative outlets to remain open in the Ratnapura district to ensure the uninterrupted supply of consumer items. The Fuel supply has been hampered as a result of several filling stations being inundated with water.

Around one thousand five hundred families have been displaced in areas of Dehiowita, Deraniyagala and Ruwanwella. Several bridges in these areas have been damaged by torrential rains while several roads are blocked by earth-slips.

Emergency relief unit is now operating 24 hours with the hotline 0112 43 15 79. Two million rupees have been allocated to grant immediate relief to the victims in Gampaha, Ratnapura and Kalutara districts.

Extensive investigations are now being held on the suicide bomb attack occurred at Colombo Fort this morning.

Hours before the installation of Pillayan as the Chief Minister of the East M.L.A.M Hizbullah along with two other elected Muslim members from Batticaloa to the Eastern Provincial Council have informed the Governor-East that they would not support Pillayan in the council and would function as a separate group.
