Sri lanka Freedom Party holds talks with other political parties to jointly contest EP polls

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party is holding talks with other main political parties on contesting the provincial council elections in the eastern province. The Central Working Committee of the SLFP has appointed a team of representatives under the chairmanship of Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva in this regard.

Other members of the team are Minister Susil PremaJayantha and senior advisor to the President parliamentarian Basil Rajapakse. They held talks this afternoon at the parliamentary complex with the leaders of several parties. All parties belonged to the UPFA and Mahajana Eksath Peramuna participated in the discussion except the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress.

Other Muslim Parties that represent parliament also participated in the talks. All leaders expressed their willingness to contest the provincial council election under the United People’s Freedom Alliance. The SLFP will hold separate talks with Tamil political parties as well. Meanwhile, several representatives of the SLFP held a special discussion with the Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Rahuf Hakeem regarding the election yesterday. The two parties agreed to hold further talks.

Meanwhile te Jathika Hela Urumaya has decided to contest the eastern provincial council election allied with the government. The decision was taken at a discussion held last evening by the party’s supreme Sanga Council and central committee. Issuing a statement JHU general secretary Dr. Omalpe Sobitha thera said they are contesting the upcoming election with the objective of defeating Tamil Eelam terrorism and preserving the Sinhala Buddhist heritage in the east.

The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence has recorded 64 incidents of violence as at 6 p.m today, 10 May. Of these, 48 have been classified as Major Offences and 16 as Minor. The majority of the Major Offences - 28 - were committed in the Batticaloa District followed by Ampara (12) and Trincomalee (08).

Of the Major Offences, systematic impersonation was the most widespread with a particular concentration in the Batticaloa District where 15 of the 2 such incidents occurred.
