Heavy fighting in the Vavuniya, Weli Oya, Mannar and Jaffna areas on Tuesday left 35 rebels dead, the ministry said, adding that three soldiers were killed and 16 injured. There was no immediate comment from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who are fighting for an independent homeland for minority Tamils and control a large part of Sri Lanka's north. However, the rebels accused the army of launching an artillery attack in Pooneryn, in the island's north on Tuesday, killing a 24-year-old man and injuring a 16-year-old student. The ministry denied the charge. At least 2,190 rebels have been killed in fighting since the beginning of January, according to government figures. A total of 130 soldiers have been killed in the same period. The claims cannot be independently verified as the government prevents reporters and rights groups from visiting frontline areas.
