Sri Lanka President directed to take necessary action to ensure security of the SLRC staff LankaEverything.com News Desk 18-03-2008
The President directed relevant units to take necessary action to ensure the security of the Rupavahini Corporation staff. A special discussion was held yesterday evening at Temple Trees between President Mahinda Rajapakse and representatives of trade unions of government media institutions. Minister of Information and Media Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena were also present at the discussion. The discussion focused on assaults on few employees attached to the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.
President directed the relevant officers to prove into these incidents and take security measures to protect the corporation staff. Rupavahini trade union leaders acknowledged these measures and said they will work together with all parties to ensure the wellbeing of SLRC. The IGP, the DIG in charge of the investigations concerned and senior officials of the police and CID attended the discussion in addition to the Secretary to the Ministry of Information and Media and heads of the four state media institutions.

The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence has recorded 64 incidents of violence as at 6 p.m today, 10 May. Of these, 48 have been classified as Major Offences and 16 as Minor. The majority of the Major Offences - 28 - were committed in the Batticaloa District followed by Ampara (12) and Trincomalee (08).
Of the Major Offences, systematic impersonation was the most widespread with a particular concentration in the Batticaloa District where 15 of the 2 such incidents occurred.

The United National Party says the entire polls of the Eastern Province were corrupted and the party will take legal actions against the responsible authorities.
