IT IS A NO GO NOW FOR SRI LANKA CAPTAIN AT DERBYSHIRE 16-04-2008
Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene will not be able to play for Derbyshire this season after all.
Club and player have finally bowed to the inescapable time pressures of modern international cricket and cancelled the contract between them.
Missing out on the chance to see one of the world's best batsmen in their ranks will be a huge disappointment for the club and their supporters - and to Jayawardene, too, because his desire to taste county cricket for the first time was one of the factors that drove the deal through quickly.
When he signed in October, it was a coup for Derbyshire that made the rest of the country sit up and take notice.
It was originally intended that the 30-year-old right-hander would be available for around three months of the season.
But that time was cut when the Indian Premier League came with their offer of outrageous money and then moved the dates of their competition. When the possibility arose that the Asia Cup would be revived, it became impractical to bring Jayawardene in for what would have been only a couple of weeks.
"We've known this was coming for a while," said head of cricket John Morris.
"We have tried every avenue to make this work for us and for Mahela but when the dates for the IPL changed and then they started talking about the Asia Cup, it got so we could not see any point in bringing him here for so short a time.
"I'm desperately disappointed and I'm sure our membership is too but I hope everyone understands that we acted in good faith.
"If we or if Mahela had done anything wrong, I would be upset about it but that is not the case. We tried to bring one of the best players in world cricket to Derbyshire and it did not work out for reasons out of our hands."
Morris added that Derbyshire are now "discussing options" for the season without Jayawardene.
Australian batsman Chris Rogers is a high-quality overseas signing but he had requested a mid-season break to recharge his batteries after a tough year at home and Morris' preference is to sign another overseas star for around four weeks to coincide with the Twenty20 Cup in June.
But he says this experience has not deterred him from trying to bring in more top stars in the future - including Jayawardene.
"I will continue trying to sign the best players I can for Derbyshire and if it is not possible to sign the top world stars, then I will look at the next-best players," he added.
