Anurudha Ratnayake becomes first Sri Lankan boxer to qualify for an Olympics in forty years 11-04-2008
Sri Lankan boxer Anurudha Ratnayake has qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics making him the first Lankan boxer in to do so in forty years. Meanwhile Dian Gomes was incidentally re-elected Presidnet of ABA for the fifth consecutive year. The man responsible for the revival of the sports flagging fortunes in the country unveiled a new sponsorship package. A sponsorship deal worth Rs. 4 million was struck with thread manufacturers, A & E Lanka Limited. Gomes who also heads MAS Holdings (Pvt) Ltd. as Group Director said that they too have given Rs. 2 million, while an additional Rs. 500,000/= has been given through Stretchline.
It is estimated that Rs. 3 million is needed for Anurudha Ratnayake’s participation at the Beijing Olympics to be held in August this year.
He said: “The ABA developed boxing in three new regions (Koggala, Thulhiriya and Biyagama) last year (2007) and a regional development structure is to be introduced during this year.
A junior pool of under-16 and under-18 boxers will be picked for a development training programme in Thailand after August this year. “Our goal and development strategy is for a medal at the London Olympics in 2012, and groom the next generation of boxers,” Gomes said.
