Sri Lanka - Dian Gomes re-elected for fifth consecutive year 11-04-2008
The Annual General Meeting of the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (ABASL) saw Dian Gomes being unanimously re-elected as president. This will mean he will head the ABASL for a record fifth successive year.
What is special about this is that it is the first time that an ABASL president has been elected for a fifth successive year after the Sports Ministry placed a rule saying that a sports head can hold his post for a term of only two years.
But the ABASL’s Ex-Co unanimously voted for Gomes as President for an unprecedented fifth year. This will be a memorable year not only for Gomes who has given boxing in this country a new lease of life but for Sri Lankans at large. For the first time in forty years a Sri Lankan boxer will compete in the Olympics.
Gomes who addressed the media at a briefing said: “It’s been my dream to see a Sri Lankan boxer compete in the Olympics during my time and I am proud to say that Anuruddha Ratnayake has managed to achieve this magnanimous feat after a lapse of 40 years”
Our main focus this year is the Olympics. We are confident that Anuruddha will bring home a medal. He is currently ranked within the top eight in the world and he has what it takes to go all the way to the top”, said Gomes who is personally masterminding Ratnayake’s preparation for this big occasion.
He further said over the last year, the ABA initiated boxing in a number of new locations such as Koggala, Thulhiriya and Biyagama: “I have given each coach a target to achieve in terms of developing potential young boxers from the rural areas”, he said.
Office bearers: Dian Gomes (president), Udeni Kiridena (vice president), Hemantha Weerasinghe (secretary) and Nishantha Dharmadasa (treasurer).
