Sri Lanka seek first Test win in the West Indies
13-03-2008

Sri Lanka left for a month-long tour of the West Indies on Thursday with captain Mahela Jayawardene determined to win his country's first Test match on Caribbean soil.

"We are obviously looking to win the Test series and we stand a good chance of doing that," Jayawardene said ahead of the 15-man squad's departure. Sri Lanka had previously toured the West Indies in 1997 and 2003 with both series ending in 1-0 win for the hosts.

Jayawardene said the tour will provide Sri Lanka with an opportunity to establish a regular Test opening pair following the retirements of former captains Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu. Michael Vandort had already secured one opening position, the Sri Lankan captain said, adding young Malinda Warnapura would relish the opportunity to stake his claim for the other slot.

Sri Lanka's bowling attack was, however, weakened by the absence of frontline bowlers Lasith Malinga and Farveez Maharoof due to injuries. The tour opens with a three-day match from March 17 in Guyana, which will also host the first Test from March 22-26. The second Test will be played at Port of Spain, Trinidad from April 3-7.

Jayawardene said the Guyana wicket will help his spin attack led by Test cricket's most successful bowler Muttiah Muralitharan. "We played a couple of one-day games in Guyana during the World Cup last year and it will definitely be to our liking as it takes spin," he said.

"Trinidad has a bit of pace and bounce." Sri Lanka will also play three one-day internationals against the West Indies after the Test series.

Sri Lanka's Test squad: Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Kumar Sangakkara, Michael Vandort, Malinda Warnapura, Thilan Samaraweera, Tillekeratne Dilshan, Chamara Silva, Prasanna Jayawardene (wicket-keeper), Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, Nuwan Kulasekara, Chanaka Welegedara, Ishara Amarasinghe, Rangana Herath, Thilan Thushara.
