Sri Lankan government today said that they will commence generating electricity from the Norochcholai power plant in Kalpitiya peninsula off the Northwestern coast in the country by the year 2010.
Speaking at the parliament this evening Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Senaviratne pointed out that 30% of the construction work in the project was almost finished.
According to the Minister Norochcholai power plant will cost approximately US $ 455 million. The funds are provided by the Exim Bank of China.
The construction work for the 300 MW coal fired thermal power plant with infrastructure for a 900 MW power plant had started in 2006 amid heavy resistance from the Catholic community of the area.
The successful completion of this project will enhance the capacity of the national grid of Sri Lanka with an expected output of 1658 Gwh of annual energy at distribution level for delivery to consumers.

Sri Lanka Army latest offensive elements 53 and 55 divisions are now in the process of consolidating their positions on the newly captured LTTE's first line of defence at the Northern theatre of operations, say the defence sources.
According to the sources, troops of 53 division are now linking up the captured terror bunkers in the Kilaly area, South of A-9 road while the 55 division soldiers are engaged in clearing operations in the Muhamalai forward area, North of the A-9.
Army shifted its mode of operations from active defence to all out offence in the Northern theatre on Saturday (Nov 15) by running at the LTTE's forward defence lines (FDL) in Muhamalai and Kilaly . Heavy clashes prevailed in the areas for 5 consecutive days , as the terrorists made a desperate attempt to halt the army advance.

Colombo 19 November 2008. Maldivian, the airline division of Island Aviation Services of the Maldives commenced its scheduled operations to Colombo effective 06 November 2008.
Maldivian will initially operate five daily flights on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Flights leave Malé at 1800hrs and arrive in Colombo at 2030hrs while flights leaving Colombo at 2115hrs arrive in the Maldivian capital at 2245hrs (all local times)

Sri Lankan Tamils in Canada averted an attempted LTTE propaganda event that was scheduled to be held at University of Oshawa (Durham College), Toronto on Tuesday (Nov 18).
According to informed sources in Toronto, the Tamil Students Association of the College was the main organizer of the event, scheduled from 3-7 PM at the college premises.

The Sri Lankan government is to amend the Wages Boards Ordinance, No. 27 of 1941, to incorporate provisions relating to 'Contract Labour' and to refer the proposed amendment to the Legal Draftsman to draft the amends to the Ordinance.

An Internal Audit review of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for the financial years 2006-2007 has found that SLC’s liquidity position had been deteriorating over the period under review, mainly due to high capital expenditure, borrowing costs and infrastructure development commitments, with losses running into millions of rupees, according to the report tabled in Parliament today by MP and Interim Committee Chairman of SLC Arjuna Ranatunga.
