General appreciation of Sri Lanka\'s presentation at the Universal Periodic Review in Geneva

Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe headed the Sri Lankan delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Council\'s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on Tuesday (13 May) in Geneva. Minister Samarasinghe presented Sri Lanka\'s national report which was commended by all countries participating in the Review.

The formal initial presentation of the report was followed by an interactive dialogue in which a series of questions, comments and recommendations were made to which Minister Samarasinghe and his delegation responded.

Countries that took the floor, numbering about 60, appreciated the very comprehensive report presented by Sri Lanka and the openness and frankness with which responses were provided to both written questions and during the interactive dialogue.

The thematic areas covered by the national report included the national institutional framework for the promotion and protection of human rights, implementation of Sri Lanka\'s obligations under international human rights instruments, Sri Lanka\'s priorities in the area of the promotion and protection of human rights and the technical assistance and cooperation required by Sri Lanka in order to meet those priorities.

The Sri Lankan delegation headed by Minister Samarasinghe included Attorney-General C.R. De Silva PC, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UN at Geneva Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka, Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and Law Reforms, Suhada Gamalath, and Secretary to the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and National Integration Ms. Malkanthi Wickremasinghe, Peace Secretariat head Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha, as well as other senior officials.
