Foreign media banned from East - CAFFE 08-05-2008
The government has declared the eastern province out of bounds for the foreign media wanting to cover the May 10th provincial council polls there, the Campaign for Free and Fair Elections alleges.
In a letter to the Elections Commissioner, CAFFE said a journalist from the Associated Press had been turned back from the east, and that he had been told that permission was needed from the Defence Ministry to enter the province.
The Defence Ministry order is a violation of the fundamental right to information, and a curb on independent reporting, it said.
CAFFE requested the Elections Commissioner to focus his attention on this as a priority matter.
