Sufficient officials deploy for EP election

The Election General Secretariat says all the arrangements have been finalized for the upcoming Eastern Provincial Council.

Officers who have been deployed for the election are due to report to their centres form today. The Election office for the added they have been deployed from Colombo and several other areas.

Assistant Election Commissioner of Batticaloa S.Sudakaran said several officers who have been deployed for the duties in the province have already reported to service.

Arrangements have also been finalized to send ballot Boxes and the officers for the polling booths by tomorrow evening.

Assistant Election Commissioners of Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara say they should inform the shortcomings and how the voting will take place in the centres after they report to their services.

Around 6500 officers will be deployed for the election activities in the Batticaloa district. 362 polling centres have been established in the district and out of that 32 centres have been set up for the displaced. In the Ampara district 7578 officers will organize the election activities.

They will be deployed for 430 polling centres. Assistant election commissioner of the Trincomalee district disclosed around 3000 officers will be deployed for the election activities and 284 polling centres have been established in the district. Representing 35 political parties and 75 independent groups 1342 candidates will contest in the Eastern Provincial Council Election. The voting will take place from 7 AM to 4 PM on Saturday. The counting will commence at 4.30 PM. The official results will be issued from the Election General Secretariat at Colombo.

Meanwhile Senior DIG of Election activities Gamini Navaratne says a comprehensive security plan is in effect to conduct a peaceful, free and fair election in the Eastern Province. Around 28,000 policemen are stationed in the province. Campaigning for the Eastern Provincial Council elections concluded last midnight. He said that anyone who engages in election propaganda or sabotage after midnight could be arrested without a warrant. DIG Nawaratne also added a peaceful setting persists in the province and 95 percent of the complaints received so far are minor incidents.

He said any act of sabotage, including spreading false rumours, could be notified through the telephone number 119. The DIG requested all candidates, organisers and party leaders to extend their maximum support towards conducting a peaceful election.

Former JVP activist Sampath Ketape-arachchi says two armed individuals of the JVP forcibly entered his home yesterday and harassed his wife before taking away several confidential documents.
