Anthony Deceglie
ABC\'s best-kept secret can be let out of the bag. Sri Lankan-born Karina Carvalho will replace Alicia Gorey as the presenter for ABC news in a month\'s time.
Carvalho, who heard the decision on Thursday afternoon, was sworn to secrecy until today. Even telling her family and closest colleagues was off limits.
She said by the time her new role became official she would be ready to burst.
\"I feel so honoured to have this role,\'\' Carvalho, 27, said. ``A lot of privileged people have sat in the chair before me.\'\'
Carvalho has been a news reporter for ABC radio and television for nearly a year.
She impressed her bosses with tenacity and keen news sense.
ABC state news editor Kim Jordan said the choice for Aunty\'s latest news presenter came down to four people.
\"In her time with us, Karina has been an impressive addition to a talented newsroom,\'\' he said.
Carvalho moved to the UK straight after university to work with the BBC and cut her journalistic teeth with current affairs program Hard Talk.
Some of the stories she covered while in the UK included the London bombings in 2005.
\"It was one of those opportunities that I thought I couldn\'t pass up,\'\' Carvalho said.
\"It was an opportunity to go away and do something different and broaden my experience.\'\'
The Winthrop-raised journalist moved to WA when she was four and grew up a keen athlete interested in cross-country running and touch rugby.
Journalism was something she had considered, but started her tertiary education studying for a marketing degree.
\"There was always an underlying desire to get into journalism,\'\' she said. ``After much thought, I pursued it.\'\'
The next four weeks will be an intense period for Carvalho, who must now undergo training to be a news presenter.
She will also need time to adjust to the spotlight and being the new face of ABC news.
The outgoing Gorey will be moving to Melbourne to be with her boyfriend and become a news reporter for Channel 9.
