Sinhala and Tamil New Years will dawn on Sunday 13-04-2008
The Sinhala and Tamil New Years will dawn on Sunday marking the turning of sun’s orbit from the star of Pisces to the star of Aries. The public is getting ready to celebrate the New Year.
Our reporters say large crowds are pouring in main cities of the island despite the prevailing rainy weather to purchase items for the New Year.
Special bus and train services are now in operation to those who travelling to outstations on the verge of the New Year. The police say a special security plan has been implemented for the security of the public.
New Year festivals have been organised all over the island.
Astrologists say this year’s Sinhala New Year dawns at 6.29 p.m. on Sunday. The Punya Kalaya will be 12.05 p.m on Sunday to 12.53 a.m. on Monday. According to the auspicious time, the hearth should be lighted at 6.45 p.m. on Sunday dressed in red and yellow costumes facing the south to prepare milk rice and sweetmeats.
Commencing work and transactions in the new year and partaking the first meal will be at 8.10 p.m. on Sunday. Anointing of oil for the New Year will be at 7.42 a.m.on Wednesday.
The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation will air a number of New Year programmes. The New Year across the country and across the world programme will be broadcast from 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. on Sunday through the Sinhala National Service and all the provincial services of the SLBC. The Bank of Ceylon will sponsor this programme. The programme could be listened through the Middle East Service as well. The Maldives, India, France, Italy, Britain, Korea, Japan and United Arab Emirates will be connected to the programme.
The New year festivals to be held in Singapore and Malaysia will be aired through State Radio with the sponsorship of Dialog GSM and the Seylan Bank. The SLBC will broadcast the live coverage of State anointing ceremony to be held at the Saman Develaya in Rathnapura on the 16th of this month.
Meanwhile, health authorities caution the public on using fire works during the festive season. They said the people should a also focus their attention on preventing Road accidents and accidents related to games.
