Andaman transhipment centre to compete with Singapore, Colombo 02-12-2008
An international transhipment centre is likely to come up in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, promising to compete with Colombo and Singapore in cargo handling.
\'\'There will be a deep draft port with international transhipment facility at Great Nicobar. It will compete with Colombo and Singapore - the busiest transhipment centres in the world,\'\' Andaman and Nicobar Islands Chief Secretary Vivek Rae said.
WAPCOS, a public sector consultant, was at present doing feasibility study on the proposed hub that would facilitate ships from different directions to unload cargo to be carried to new destinations, he said.
Great Nicobar, with a size of 8,000 square km, is largest of the Andaman and Nicobar islands and twice the size of Bangkok.
The Union Territory authorities had also approached Indian Oil Corporation for setting up an oil bunker (storage) terminal at Great Nicobar and the proposal was under consideration.
The proposed bunker would facilitate import of crude, particularly from the South-East Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia.
\'\'Bringing oil through this route will be cheaper for the ship liners since there will be no taxes,\'\' Mr Rae said.
While the Ministry of Shipping had been requested the declare Port Blair as a major port, a feasibility study was also underway for setting up a number of fish landing centers across the islands, he said.
