Excon 2008 begins 09-05-2008
Local Construction and Engineering Services Minister Rajitha Senaratne opens Sri Lanka’s premier construction exhibition Excon 2008 in Colombo on Friday.
The exhibition is designed to facilitate the enhancement of industry capacities and competitiveness by promoting linkages among different stakeholders drawn from large multinationals to the SME sector.
It is the gateway to the establishment of strategic partnerships and the expansion of markets. This is an ideal opportunity to promote and discover new products services and appropriate technology.
Inaugurating the Excon 2008 exhibition Minister Rajitha Senaratne said the local construction sector would receive cement and river sands soon. At present the ministry is working with private and public sector institutions to ease Sand shortage and shortage of cement. Due to the global demand cement has a huge demand from various countries.
Sri Lanka has already discussed with the private sector how to reactivate the Kankasanthurai cement plant, which is now idling. One of India’s leading cement makers Birala Group has already made their bids before the government of Sri Lanka to reactivate the KKS Plant.
The Minister said the national construction chamber helps to increase the contribution of the construction industry to the GDP from 7.4 percent to 15 percent.
Speaking on the occasion Chairman of the National Chamber of Construction Industry Deshabandu Surath Wikremasinghe said Excon 2008 provides opportunities for local and international venders to meet their target clientele.
Addressing the gathering CEO of the Chamber Dakshitha Thalgodapitiya explained the event would be attended by leading consultants ,developers ,contractors vendors and professional service providers. Around 30 thousand visitors from Sri Lanka and foreign guests from India UK and Qatar are expected to visit this exhibition.
