Minister Bandula Gunawardene says raids will be conducted to apprehend traders who sell low quality rice. The Minister at a media briefing yesterday further said stocks of rice imported from Myanmar will be kept as buffer stocks. He added however that the tornado that swept over Myanmar recently has delayed importation of rice from that country. Minister Gunawardena further said retail outlets of the building materials corporation will sell cement at reduced prices. Fonterra Brands Lanka Managing Director Achyut Reddy made the announcement during a Foundation Laying Ceremony at the company’s Biyagama site to mark the start of the project. Tamil businessman shot dead by LTTE gunmen- Jaffna Tue, 13-05-2008 07:00:00 Alleged LTTE gunmen shot and killed a Tamil businessman, owner of a communication center at Pothapady Road in Kokuvil East, Jaffna yesterday (May 12) evening. The victim identified as Mahendran Paramanathan, 36, was shot by alleged LTTE gunmen who stormed into his communication store at around 7.p.m. The gunmen were on motor bikes and have immediately fled the area, Jaffna Police said citing witnesses.
