UNP accuses TMVP of issuing illegal ID cards 05-05-2008
A subtle move by the TMVP to issue special identity card through the Grama Niladaris to Batticaloa and Trincomalee residents came under fire from the UNP-SLMC alliance which said the move would pave the way for election malpractices.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake alleged that the TMVP was distributing the forged identity cards saying they were issued by the Elections Department.
Mr. Attanayake told Daily Mirror these had been distributed from TMVP party offices in the area and the matter would be taken up with the Elections Chief.
He said this is totally illegal as the special election identity cards should be distributed to voters only through government offices.
What should have done by state organizations is being done by TMVP party offices, Mr. Attanayake said.
He alleged that bundles of poll cards had been handed over to several UPFA candidates in Thirukovil and Akkaraipattu areas and that there was a large scale conspiracy to rig the upcoming Eastern Provincial Council poll.
UNP-SLMC alliance chief ministerial candidate Rauf Hakeem said the TMVP was involved in issuing identity cards and the alliance would be taking up the
matter with the Elections Commissioner and through him with the Public Administration Ministry.
Divisional Secretaries say Grama Niladaris in Trinco are coming under pressure even from Ministers to issue identity cards in the names of those who have even left the country, he alleged.
However TMVP spokesman Azad Moulana refuted the allegation but admitted they had begun an initiative with the Grama Niladaris of Batticaloa-Trincomalee to obtain identity cards for displaced people.
We do not have any machine to produce the identity cards. That is totally false, he said and added that the UNP was resorting to making such claims as they were heading for certain defeat at the polls.
Mr. Moulana further alleged that the UNP had brought down a group of thugs to intimidate the people of Batticaloa and to compel them vote against the TMVP.
When contacted by media the Batticaloa office of the Peoples Action For Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said it was unaware of such an issue and had not received any complaint in this regard.
