Sri Lanka Army Chief Sarath Fonseka visits Buddha Gaya Tissa Madawela in Buddha Gaya 20-03-2008
More than 30 members from the Elite Indian special Commando unit, the National Security Guard (NSG), popularly referred to as the Black Cats, were guarding the Sri Lankan army chief Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka when he took time off from his busy official visit to India, to visit Buddha Gaya the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Ten minutes before his arrival at the site the whole temple complex was cleared of pilgrims as well as visitors and workers by the Indian security personnel for safety reasons. The visit lasted only 30 minutes so hundreds of Sri Lankan pilgrims were not unhappy by the heavy security blanket that rang the visiting military chief but pleased about the care and protection taken by the authorities.
Mr. Fonseka and his party were welcomed by the Head of Mahabodhi Vihara in Buddha Gaya and was taken to the main shrine room. He offered a large basket of flowers to the Buddha Statue and took five precepts. Resident monks at the temple chanted Seth Pirith and Mr. Fonseka offered Atapirikara and a special robe which was immediately put on the Golden Buddha statue. He was then taken to the site where the Bodhi Tree is situated. At the Bodhi Tree Mr. Fonseka was given the rare opportunity to pay homage at the VAJRASANA, the stone slab covering the actual place where Prince Siddhartha sat on a bed of grass to become the Buddha. This is considered by many to be the Holiest of Holy places for the Buddhists around the world.
The Vajrasana or the Diamond Throne was made in the 3rd century B.C. by Emperor Dharmashoka. It lies between the Temple and the Maha Bodhi Tree.
Later he was taken around the temple complex to show all the important places within the complex.
After the visit General Fonseka ignored the advice of his security personnel and came over to talk to hundreds of Sri Lankan pilgrims who were waiting to enter the temple. Many went closer to talk to him and in some instances knelt down before him in a moving gesture of affection and respect.
