Lanka Tribune 27-02-2008

The annual charity dinner dance of Imperial College Sri Lankan Society was held on Saturday 23rd February at Troxy, Commercial Road in East London. This year’s event was organised in aid of the Maharagama Cancer Hospital in Sri Lanka.

The event kicked off with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp by the chief guest, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the UK, Her Excellency Kshenuka Seneviratne, the legendary Desmond De Silva, and the Co-Presidents of the Sri Lankan society Kushala Abeysekera and Praveen Dias.

A highlight of the event was the performances by some of the finest talent of Imperial College London. The rising stars Rosh & Dan, who are already infamous amongst the student crowd in London, also performed at this event. The main performers of the night were the King of Baila Desmond De Silva and the Foreign Affair. The dinner dance was followed by an after party with DJ Nihal from BBC Radio 1 and DJ Santi who is one of the finest DJs at Imperial College London.

The Imperial College Sri Lankan society is one of the biggest Sri Lankan Societies in the UK, and annual dinner dance the biggest such event organised by a Sri Lankan society in this country. The vision of the Imperial College Sri Lankan society is to provide all Sri Lankans as well as non Sri Lankans, irrespective of their race or religion, an opportunity to meet and explore the culture and heritage of our beautiful island. The event on Saturday, was a fine example of how the society has managed to put its vision into practice, as there was a sell out crowd enjoying the night away in true Sri Lankan style.
