60th INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATED AT KINGSBURY TEMPLE Tissa Madawela 08-02-2008
The Sri Saddhatissa International Buddhist Centre celebrated the 60 Anniversary of Independence in style on Monday 4 February evening. H.E. Kshenuka Seneviratne, High Commissioner and Staff of the High Commisission, Councillor Ruth Maher (BRENT) Councillors Mano Dharmaraja and Nizam Ismail (HARROW) were among the distinguished guests.
Photographs taken during the Independence Celebrations in 1948 together with photographs of successive Prime Ministers and Presidents and maps of historical importance were on display In the Assembly Hall.
The proceedings started with the High Commissioner unveiling and illuminating a flag inside the hall, which was daintily decorated.
This was followed by the lighting of the traditional oil lamp , while Magul Bera was played and the conch shell blown , by the Venerable Galayaye Piyadassi ,MBE , Chief Sangha Nayaka of the UK, HE Kshenuka Seneviratne ,High Commissioner , The councillors, and Mr Devage Buluwela ,who worked with the Sri Lanka Mission from 1948 to 1990 and is resident here ,and who has not taken British Nationality .
Then the guests carried 60 candles outside into the quadrangle to place them in the shape of 60 before the Buddha Statue .
The Bodhi Puja was held to Bless HE Mahinda Rajapakse,President , The Government ,The Country, The Service Commanders, the Armed Forces, Police and the and the people.
The Ceremony ended with the screening of HE Mahinda Rajapakse’s address to the nation on that day which was very well received with applause.
The large gathering included many who were associated with Sri Lankan Government agencies in various capacities during the past.
